If your GP refers you to a specialist, you have the right to choose which hospital and consultant-led team will be in charge of your treatment. You may choose from an NHS hospital or a private hospital that also provides services to the NHS. Your choice of hospital service will depend on the type of specialist you need to see, but there is a choice for most medical conditions.

You will start by seeing your specialist at a hospital outpatient appointment. There are alternatives to visiting a large, busy hospital to meet your specialist and you can choose instead to attend outpatient appointments in a smaller hospital or clinic.
